How about a change of scenery this year for the festive season? Experience the festive atmosphere of the Lot’s medieval villages, which are decked out in lights for the occasion. And it’s not just the decorations that will dazzle you. Christmas markets punctuate the weekends in December, offering the very best in local gastronomy and crafts.
At Gîtes d’Hélios, we welcome families during the Christmas vacations: 4, 7 and up to 11 people can enjoy the comfort of our buildings. The Christmas tree is waiting for you. Put down your bags and enjoy a family Christmas in the Lot, at Belfort-du-Quercy.
Why choose the Lot for a family Christmas?
Authentic festive season
The Lot is one of those regions where traditions endure. It offers an alternative to crowded ski resorts and busy tourist destinations. The atmosphere is family-friendly. Children, their parents and grandparents discover the life-size cribs in some villages. They can admire the decorations, which are very much in evidence in our department, and even meet Santa Claus.
At Gîtes d’Hélios, you can let go. Have a real family breakfast without looking at the clock. Let the kids play while you quietly prepare lunch with market produce. Sit by the wood-burning stove at Le Grand Hélios and chat as a family.
Our buildings are spacious and the kitchens are fully equipped. Children can have fun in the toy library, the library, with the ping-pong table and take advantage of the large outdoor spaces for exercise. And the surrounding countryside is ideal for family walks.
Tasty gastronomy
In the Lot, foie gras and truffles are the undisputed stars of the festive table. But the local gastronomy also conceals many other treasures that will find their place on the New Year’s Eve menu:
- capon or poularde du Quercy, raised in the open air;
- porcini mush rooms, which add a wonderful flavour to stuffings ;
- Rocamadour, a small goat’s cheese that melts deliciously on toast;
- walnuts are as tasty as an aperitif as they are in a winter salad;
- Cahors wine, powerful and full-bodied, ideal for accompanying festive meats;
- and the pastis quercynois, an apple pie with armagnac (or rum) to finish on a high note.
It’s the perfect opportunity to create a traditional, 100% local Christmas meal. Perfume your starters with a few slices of truffle to spice things up, sauce your capon with a Quercy saffron jus and try your hand at pastis! And if you’re taking advantage of the festive season to enjoy wild boar stew, beef stew or lamb, accompany your meat with a Cahors wine. It’s a perfect match for these mature, stewed meats.

Experience Christmas traditions in Quercy
Truffle markets
If you’ve never been to a truffle market, make the most of your stay in the Quercy region to enjoy this unique experience. The markets at Lalbenque and Limogne-en-Quercy keep the tradition alive. A unique atmosphere reigns, a mixture of excitement and rituals that have been skilfully repeated for generations.
The spectacle is well worth the detour: truffle growers stand side by side and place their baskets of truffles on the benches. About a metre apart, separated by a rope, the buyers wait patiently. When the whistle blows, the transactions begin, and in just a few minutes, everything is gone. The truffles are gauged and weighed on old Roman scales, just as they were in the old days.
For children, it’s fascinating to discover this mysterious “black diamond”, harvested by specially trained truffle dogs or pigs. And don’t forget to take home a few grams of fresh truffle to enhance your Christmas meal!
Nativity scenes and village illuminations
The Quercy region has a long tradition of nativity scenes, and in particular of living nativity scenes. Costumed representations of our villages have enchanted young and old for many years.
Christmas also means illuminations. As night falls, the towns and villages of Cahors, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and Cardaillac become magical. If you like the typical atmosphere of the festive season, you’re in for a real treat. The Valentré Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lights up with Christmas lights, as do many of the medieval monuments in France’s Most Beautiful Villages.
Christmas concerts in Romanesque churches
The Occitanie region boasts an exceptional religious heritage, much of which has been inherited by the Quercy region. Many Romanesque churches, true architectural gems, host Christmas concerts throughout December.
Programs range from Gregorian chant and gospel to baroque concerts and Occitan polyphony. The programs change every year, and the remarkable acoustics offer a new sound experience every time.

Cahors Christmas market
The Cahors Christmas market is a must for the Lot region during the festive season. It features numerous chalets selling local crafts, local produce and, of course, Christmas specialities. Children can take a spin on the merry-go-round, and adults can browse for the latest gifts.
The atmosphere is particularly warm in the late afternoon, when the towns light up and the smell of mulled wine wafts through the medieval streets. Take advantage of your visit to discover or rediscover Cahors by night. The town is beautifully presented, and the historic center is easy to explore, even with the youngest visitors.
Castelnau-Montratier Christmas market
Castelnau-Montratier is a magnificent medieval bastide where a traditional Christmas market is held every year. The chalets are set up under the arcades of the central square and in the adjacent streets.
This market stands out for the quality of its arts and crafts. You’ll find jewelry, ceramics and textile creations, unique gift ideas far removed from industrial mass production.
Special entertainment is provided for the occasion, including a show for the youngest, a Christmas choir and a tombola. Every year, Santa Claus comes for a visit before starting his rounds.
Figeac Christmas market
Further afield, but well worth the detour, the Figeac Christmas market takes place in the exceptional setting of this medieval town, classified as a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire.
Figeac is the town to visit with the whole family. The Champollion museum offers a wide range of activities and remains open at this time of year. Make the most of your visit to the Christmas market to take in the sights.

A cosy Christmas at the Gîtes d’Hélios
The comfort of spacious gîtes to bring the whole family together
Spending Christmas in a B&B rather than a hotel offers a real advantage. You can recreate the atmosphere of a large family home with 4-star comfort. At Gîtes d’Hélios, our two buildings are ideal for families of 4 or 7. You can also book both gîtes at the same time for up to 11 people.
The 167 m² Grand Hélios is designed for 7 people. For winter 2025, we’ve fitted the gîte with a wood-burning stove. In addition to the well-being it provides, it contributes to the cocooning atmosphere we love so much at Christmas. The gîte is spacious, so everyone can feel at ease. High-speed wi-fi, table tennis, a library and a games library offer a thousand opportunities to share happy moments. And when night comes, everyone can find their privacy in cosy bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
La Petite Eos sleeps up to 4 people. The gîte is ideal for small families. Its single-storey layout is a real asset: practical for young children, accessible for people with reduced mobility, and comfortable for grandparents. It’s the ideal gîte for a small Christmas party. If you book both gîtes, younger or older guests will be able to rest a little earlier in the evening.
An ideal location for exploring the region
Belfort-du-Quercy is located on the border of the Lot and Tarn-et-Garonne departments, a strategic position for taking full advantage of the Christmas festivities and the region’s emblematic sites.
- Lalbenque (15 minutes away). After the Tuesday truffle market, you can continue your visit at Saint-Quirin church, home to remarkable Baroque furnishings listed as historic monuments.
- Cahors (30 minutes away). Its Christmas market, one of the largest in the department, illuminates the historic center. Take the opportunity to admire the majestic Pont Valentré, a UNESCO World Heritage site, beautifully illuminated in the evening.
- Montcuq-en-Quercy-Blanc (20 minutes away) Don’t miss the traditional Sunday morning market, one of the most famous in the Lot. You’ll find everything you need for your Christmas meal from local producers: foie gras, free-range poultry, AOC cheeses and many other gourmet treasures.
- Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (40 minutes away). Perched on a cliff 100 meters above the Lot river, this village, listed as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, becomes magical with the Christmas decorations. - Figeac (50 minutes away). Champollion’s hometown is well worth a visit, especially for families. The museum dedicated to him, located in the house where he was born, is a particular favorite with children. There are fun workshops for the youngest visitors, and others for the whole family (even on December 24 and 31).
- Rocamadour (55 minutes away). The sacred town takes on an almost mystical dimension during the festive season. Take the opportunity to visit the sanctuary and its 7 chapels.
